hey guys, i tried to ask about this on the full size jeep forum, and nobody has said anything yet...
what i'm dealing with is a motor that i swapped in that i got for free after it sat uncovered in a parking lot at a shop near the beach for several months. it is the AMC 360 v8 out of a 1983 cherokee laredo. it runs pretty decent, save for a few exhaust leaks i need to work out, and i get this strange popping noise that from the inside of the jeep sounds a lot like the rod knock that my old motor had, but it's intermittent, and doesn't coincide with engine rpm's, but it does seem to make the engine shut off for half a second when it pops... i pulled the air cleaner off for easier access to the carb screws, and with the motor running and the air cleaner off, it is obvious that the popping sound is coming from inside the stock motorcraft 2150 2bbl carb. the carb is relatively fresh remanufactured from vato zone, with only 3,000 or so miles on it... do you guys know what i can do to get rid of the popping noise? i had no problems with this until i swapped in the free motor.:helpme:

bump? i plugged all the vacuum stuff, and still have the pop. added lucas fuel treatment, still popping. motor runs good, aside from this.

are you sure the firing order is correct?

yeah, it's right. it ran well for a few days after i got the motor running. i talked to a couple of people, and it sounds to them like i have a valvetrain issue that is keeping a valve from opening, thus giving me a misfire, and not burning the gas that was suppose to go to that cylinder, which ends up igniting inside the intake manifold? yeah, i'm not looking forward to it, but i guess i'm iguana pull off the valve covers, and see if anything is messed up. my old motor was a good strong running motor until one of the rod bearings failed, so if need be i might swap over the pushrods, rocker arms, and the little pivot bridges that i was told were replaceable on these motors.
i have also been told that the amc 360's are notorious for having oiling issues, which i could readily believe would cause the top end of my motor to fail.
anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do once i get ready to put this mofo together? such as pour some magical substance(rislone, lucas, etc...) over the valves before i run it? what should i do if i find that the entire top end of the motor is dry?
i have done a couple motor swaps, but i don't know too much about how to keep an effed up one from effin up all the way to crapsville... tell me what you know!

I am sorry but I tried not to point this out...

Maybe the iguana in your engine is the problem.
