View Full Version : Oil Pressure, is this right?

I just did the Gauge swap for my 2.5L XJ. I reset the tach for a I4. I removed a lot of miles from the odo to match what is on my '93 (95k) and replaced the temp sender to a analog input. All works great!!!
Today I installed the Oil Pressure sender for a Gauge input so that I quit getting a pegged needle.
It reads 62psi at cold start up idle, and aprox. 50 psi at running temp idle . The manual says I should be at 25 - 35 PSI at idle, and @ up to 75 psi at 1600 rpm.
I have a Pure1 oil filter and 10-30 Valvoline in the block. Last three oil changes have been only slightly darker then the oil I put in 3k before.
I beleive the sender unit is coorect (I trust the parts guy).
Is this a good thing or do I need some adjustment???
Any Input would be valued!

I'd say you're golden. My 90 Renix sees about 12psi HOT w/ 15w-40.:hang:

You might just check the pressure with a mechanical gauge first. It's possible the gauge in the cluster is off. I had a problem with the voltmeter on my 95 and found that the way they calibrate these gauges is with a little magnet stuck to the inside of the gauge casing with a dab of glue. Moving the magnet in or out adjusts the meter. It's mickey-mouse stuff. If the gauge cluster you got was from a junkyard, and spent time outdoors, or was manhandled, the glue can come loose, the magnet move, and calibration goes bye bye. So test the pressure first, and if it's not what the gauge says, you can either recalibrate your eye on the gauge, or recalibrate the gauge with a little patience and a relatively elastic and gooey adhesive such as "shoe goo" or automotive trim and emblem adhesive.
I figure with automotive gauges the main thing is to have an idea where they normally belong. The numbers are unimportant, only the change.

Somewhere the is a gauge regulator, it sounds like yours in off.

I don't think they do that any more. It's not in the schematics. But any way, back in the days when there was one (it was usually a pretty simple thermally actuated vibrator) the one regulator worked on all the gauges. If only one gauge is off, I'd suspect the gauge itself, especially on a Jeep whose gauges really are calibrated with a little dab of brittle glue.

Thanks for the magnet info Matthew!
I will probably look into adjusting the gauge as it would drive me nuts over time (I work with gauges all day).
I'm not sure how you test oil pressure. Is it a test gauge I can "rent" from the autoparts store, or do I need a shop to check it for me?

You can buy a cheap pressure guage for less than $20,put a Tee fitting between the filter housing and the pressure sender, screw the guage in there or mount it where you want.
