Hi. I'm going to (hopefully) attain a alternator from the junkyard (untouched 98xj c4c(well I grabbed a few things off it before)) and I will be replacing my fried alternator. I just have a few questions.

How do I release the tension?

Any tips before I do this? This is a 98XJ.

Thank you.

Shown with radiator removed, if you couldn't tell.

The yellow arrow is the tensioner pulley.
First loosen the bolt the orange arrow is pointing to, should be a 15mm socket.
Then you'll see another bolt just behind the pulley, where the red arrow is pointing to. It is also requires a 15mm socket. This actually moves the pulley, and allows you to add or remove tension to the belt.

Okay so I blew out my back and XXXXing took chunks of skin out of my hands for nothing. I got the new alternator. (out of a 93 sahara wrangler). And busted my XXXXing ass trying to exchange them. Well. We jumped it and as soon as I let it idle it bogs out and dies. I can hold the gas and it will stay running great. but as soon as it drops down it just dies out.

XXXX my life.

Okay so I'm leaving the keys to my brother and I'm going to have him read this thread. Alternator was replaced. Same number alternator. Voltage gauge is working. I can start it now from the key. I have to hold the gas so it stays running and if let go of the gas and idles down and then just bogs out and dies. I was thinking to my self whether it was a throttle body sensor or not. Not sure. I definetly heard sqeals when I went through the puddle and it sounded like my alternator did in fact die. But it seems the problem remains with the idling down then the engine cuts out.

Turn on and give it steady gas for a while. If you let of after a couple minutes, and it stays on, you'll be fine. The computer will sometimes forget all its preset idle data when the battery gets low, and thus you will have to help it relearn it.

I have to do this every time I jump mine, as well as my friend had to do it with his '97 wrangler.

Turns out my battery was just really low. So my brother drove my truck around while I was at work and charged it up enough to fix it.

Future projects.

alternator/ac compressor swap.

splash shield from junkyard (good idea?)

I cant believe I haven't thought of this. And I downgraded to a 90 amp alternator. (off a 93 sahara)

Just a heads up (even though you already did the install) - at least around here that tensioner draw bolt LOVES to rust/seize into the pulley mounting knuckle, load that sucker up with antiseize when tightening it back down... or loosen it up and do that (don't have to actually loosen the belt, just the draw bolt!)

I broke mine in half. Luckily I had used my standard "it's on a rusty Jeep, I will buy a spare before trying to screw with it too much" as I had noticed it was not turning easily the previous time I tried to tighten my belt.
