Hey all, just want some opinions if you don't mind. I went to drive this Jeep today http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=210809161&dealer_id=1386422&car_year=1996&search_type=used&num_records=&make=JEEP&transmission=Manual&model=CHER&distance=75&make2=&address=15676&advanced=y&certified=&max_mileage=&max_price=&bkms=1161456548782&sort_type=priceDESC&min_price=&body_code=0&end_year=1996&color=&start_year=1996&drive=&engine=&fuel=&doors=&style_flag=1&cardist=31
and it's pretty much what I'm looking for (2dr, 5sp), and they are not at all common in my area. Another '96 (2dr 5sp) just went for almost $6k at a nearby dealership. This one is fairly solid, a little rust on the floor pans, doesn't like to downshift into 2nd w/o 2x clutching, power steering pump sounds like it's about to give up, but those were the only negatives I came across in a super quick once over. So if they can finance me (my credit stinks, I was really stupid in my 20s) I think I'll make an offer, but how much? Keep in mind that it's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, and they are in short supply around these parts.
thanks
shane

No more than $3K AFTER taxes, etc. Take the time to look at all the electricals and make sure they work. Lights, HVAC, also check the coolant - look for mineral buildup. Drive it long enough to get it good and warm, if it has gauges, look to see that it doesn't get above 220 degrees.

The second gear issue is pretty common. Swap out the fluid with Royal Purple and it'll get smoother.

I tell everyone ot go to www.cars.com and look up the same vintage vehicle there to get a good idea of what the market asking price of a particular car is,... then you can take it from there. 86K is pretty good for a Jeep that old. Surprised that the power steering pump sounds shot. Are you sure its not a loose belt?

No more than $3k when all is said and done. I would imagine that you'll be closer to $4-5k by the time they get done screwing with your financing, taxes, etc. I think you'd be better off looking around for a loan (will any bank write you up for pre-approval?) and getting a vehicle through private sale.

Keep in mind it's not in perfect condition (ex. rust)...i doubt it's even worth $3k. In your position...there's not much you can do about it though.

Thanks for the input guys,

Surprised that the power steering pump sounds shot. Are you sure its not a loose belt?

No, it definitely had a pronounced whine, even from the driver's seat. Took some moving my head around under the hood, but it's definitely coming from the PS pump. Took me by suprise as well.

johnlv6, unfortunately I tried to finance a Wrangler (now I know they're for cheerleaders) before I got my XJ and got shut down almost everywhere even owning my house outright and making an alright living. If their people can't help out, and I can get the dealer down around to 3K (kinda what I was thinking) I might check into other options.

All you kids out there - take care of your credit!

I forgot to mention that the rear brakes are smoked too. E-Beake comes the whole way up with no resistance, so I'll use that as leverage when and if I try to wheel and deal.

Look for a cracked exhaust manifold - that'll be a bargoning chip as well.

It is in Ky, last I saw he only wanted $1500 or so for it. I think it is the same one One of my employees went to look at, he didn't want it 'cause it is a 5 speed.
