This a decent sring compressor?

If you go for the el cheapo ones after all, use vice grips to keep them from sliding around the coils. The two-piece units seem more reliable to me just because the lever arm between the screw and the grips is much shorter. I might be crazy though.

In general Harbor Freight = Chinese junk. Go rent one or borrow a decent one from Autozone. At least they'll have a decent one that's not likely to explode and kill you, otherwise they couldn't afford the insurance.

I bent these http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=3980 the first time I used them. Kinda scary and downright dangerous when you consider how much potential engery a compressed spring has.

Also semi-agreeing on the autozone ones... make sure you get a strut compressor from them, not a spring compressor.

EDIT: removing dupe information from my previous post, I apparently have the memory of a goldfish

Looking for a decent fairly-priced spring compressor and not one of the el cheapo two-piece units that scare the crap out of you while you're using them. This one seems decent: What do you guys think? Do these style work well?

I think that would be dificult to use on an XJ, due to lack of space. It's meant fopr compressing struts when OUT of the vehicle. I use these http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=3980, have had them for years, have 2 sets. Have used many times, never a problem.

I used them to install my lift kit - really had no problems with them, except like others mentioned they liked to slide a bit (they come with "safety screws" to prevent this, once I used them it worked much better.)

On closer analysis, I used the ones that 93gc40 posted, not the one you linked to!
