Growling/grinding sound

I've got a 90 XJ. Benn through the brakes fore and aft replacing shoes/rotors. However when I brake hard I get a growling/grinding sound, that sounds like it's coming from the front. A friend said it could be bearings??? No noise when turning the wheel either jacked up or under load rolling down the street. We pulled the rear also, drums and shoes are okay. Cleaned them out real well too. Sorta baffled. ???
