September 9th, 2009, 22:17
Hey gang,

We, the SOCAL Chapter, will be taking over the annual JV run in November known as Goatfest. Your BOD is working with Richard (Goatman) to help get this gathering rolling.

Watch for more details.

The date will be Nov. 7th on Means Dry Lake in JV.

Richard will handle the BBQ. More details to come on this.

We will have a raffle. Proceed will be divided between Firends of JV and the Adopt-a-Trail program in Big Bear. We are looking for help on raffle items and setting-up/cleaning up.

There are lots of options for playing in the dirt out there.

This has been a great event for the past several years with a great turn out. We plan on keeping up the traditional fun.

We will have t-shirts available on a pre-pay basis. More details to come on this as well.

So mark your calendars.

PM me, Remi, or Josh with any questions or suggestions, or if you want to help out in any way.

Well, it's actually called the Rockin' XJ Jamboree, but most refer to it as Goatfest (I think thanks to JB). It's an annual trip to Johnson Valley where we've had quite a bit of fun every year (some more fun than others :D) There have been 50-75 rigs each year, and we've fed over a hundred people on Sat night every year.

I've been putting it on, with help from plenty of friends, but this year I'm passing the baton to the SoCal chapter.

Please do everyone a favor, leave the guns at home, or at least tucked away inside your rig. The gunplay near camp and the trails last year was way out of line. Shotguns only in all of Johnson Valley if you insist on doing some shooting, and please be at least 5 miles from camp.

I don't really think this needs to be said, but just in case it does need to be said for a few people, here it is. This is a club run, with families and many people in attendance, and it is NO PLACE for anyone to be discharging firearms anywhere even remotely close to camp, or even anywhere on the lake bed. If anyone has a friend or acquaintance attending who wants to fire their weapon, please let them know that we will not stand for it, and I will personally address anyone who does.

Also, I don't think this needs to be said, but just for the record, we will not allow loud music in main camp, nor loud late night/early morning partying. People have a right to wheel and play hard all day, and then get a good nights sleep. If you plan to come out just to get drunk and party, then camp at the other end of the lakebed from main camp. We all plan to have a good time, let's just keep the late night noise to a level that is respectful of others.

I plan on having the usual great time wheeling and hanging out with friends. See you on the lakebed.

i wont be attending this year....not sure i understand why all of a sudden magic desert rules are popping up....

when i go out to the desert i like to party...even after 10 p.m.

just my opinion...but the desert is an open place for everyone...how can you just randomly throw up rules you want enforced?

if were talking about keeping the late night noise respectful no one is allowed to have their generators on after 10 p.m. in my opinion....because for all the people that actually camp out there (with tents) can still hear the generators!

there was public urination on a camp fire, indecent exposure, drunk and disorderly conduct, negligent discharge of a firearm, just to name a few!

Whoohoo! You're throwing a wheeling event for my birthday? Sweet!! My kids will really know they just don't rate anymore. Spent last birthday in LA helping with a lift; Mothers Day at Magic Mountain (without them) and now next birthday in the land of rocks & dirt. Works for me!! Who knows, maybe one or 2 will go along, but they're not much on the tent concept. Sigh.

At least I'm better equipped for the bunny trails this year.

Will you be raffling off hammers drives in buggies again this year? It was well worth the $120 in tickets I bought last year (and the travel cost to get out there), Driving Farmer Matts rig, eating his nuts, the great calander I won and the picture of Goatman embracing his sheep (not to mention Capt Rons hospitality) were the highlight of 2008 for me,

Tell me you'll do it again in 09 so I can too.

It was a radically sick weekend, it takes balls to auction off you own nuts and let total strangers drive your rig on the hammers trails.

Even if they look and taste like pistachio's and almonds.

Skull_black, just FYI, there are some active Law Enforcement Officers on this forum (and every other forum on the Internet, probably). I don't think any of the LEO NAXJA members are actively interested in busting fellow members, but you probably shouldn't wave that fragrant flag in their faces, either. Don't put them into that uncomfortable position!!

i think the Rowdy label applies more to late-night exuberant drinking, high noise level, and/or general fun-loving mischief. There were a couple over-the-line activities last year (like guns fired too close to camp) that no one really wants to see repeated this year. I don't think that those tagged with the Rowdy label are known so much for open drug use, at least that I've seen (I move fairly freely between the groups for being a 43yr old parent of teens ).

Just try to be a little (actually, a LOT) more discrete than you were in your post... there will be LEO members, and folks with kids, and old farts like Richard that need their sleep (Sorry, Goatman, couldn't resist!! You know I love ya!), and also folks that figure that the middle of a dry lakebed in the desert is a good place to let off steam. Come out to wheel and enjoy yourself, and all should be fine!

Old Woman Springs Rd & Boone Rd, Landers CA 92285 is where you leave pavement. Drive a couple miles N/NW on the almost-paved gravel road and the camp will be out on the lakebed. The road is now passable for passenger cars (didn't used to be!).

I'm sure you can hook up with folks & caravan. Not sure if I'm heading there from Carlsbad (San Diego) or San Gabriel (Los Angeles-ish) yet.

Yeah, just punch in Old Woman Springs Rd and Boone Rd and you'll get it. You can Mapquest it to see a bigger map of the area. Turn north on Boone Rd (only way it goes) and drive about 4 miles to the dry lake bed.

From Backersfield go east on Hwy 58 to I15 at Barstow. Exit I15 at Barstow Rd/Hwy 247, go roughly 30 miles to the stop sign(last chance to get gas), turn left staying on Hwy 247, go 22 miles to Boone Rd (large brown sign on the right), turn left down Boone Rd, drive roughly 4 miles to the lakebed and look for the group on the left as you come onto the lakebed.

If you dont go you will regret it forever. I was in Oxnard last year for a few weeks and managed a layover to hit Goatfest. DO IT!!! Lots of empty seats. The "non hammers" runs are a lot fun as ride alongs and these guys always appreciate the spotters. I rode along on the "low" trails Saturday, watched the big rigs on the Hammers and then got lucky and won a raffle to drive a couple Hammers trails on Sunday.

Bring something warm (it can snow out there this time of year), a sleeping bag and make sure you can sleep in the rental car. Oh and bring a lot of beer and little trail food along with the camera.

Its like 30 miles to the nearest town and the dirt road in is full of whoop-t-doo's. A PT Cruiser can make it with just a little body damage. :)

I don't think it's that whoopy anymore. Cal's Honda Civic made it out there unscathed. They seem to be grading it somewhat often. A few years ago it was whoopy enough to get my poor overloaded '90 to repeatedly bottom out at relatively slow speeds. But since then, they've been grading it and laying gravel, and have built a bridge over the truly frightening feature. After a nice relatively flat area where you could get some nice speed going, there was a sudden 35+ degree downslope into a 8-10' deep drainage wash area and an almost immediate climb back out of it. When hurrying out Boone Road after dark to get out to the lakebed, it could come as quite an unpleasant surprise. But it now has a bridge crossing it, so even that isn't an issue.

I think you'll be just fine!!

They graded the rest of the road to Means before KOH this spring, so no whoops. Just dirt road to the lakebed where we camp. But, once you hit the lakebed it's best to slow down unless you know where ALL of the bomb craters are. We don't want that to happen again. :D

Showoff

Well, I left out that I trussed the D44 after that, since it had a little crack in it. :D

But after the unexpected jump I didn't even slow down. :)

Anybody got some gps coordinates or an address I can punch in to find out how to get there? In LA until 11/14 for business but would love to come out and watch or maybe ride along.

Where in LA are you at, and when are you free?

If the scheduling works out, you can ride out with me. I may have a free seat come trailtime too, my potential passenger hasn't commited.

Pretty bad when even your imaginary friend rejects your company.

Doesn't make me feel better. It would've been good to have you out there. I don't think you were the problem; we'd just hope you were leaving the tagalongs at home =). Hope you have fun in Pismo!!
