I took some nasty antibiotics that as it turns out have a side effect. They cause a propensity towards tendon tears. I tore my tendon just about an inch above my heal. The doctor wants to cast my ankle for a couple of months.

Anybody have any experiences?

i never tore it but i stretched it pretty good once stepping in a gopher hole. Listen to the docs and stay off it, you don't want it healing askew at all. best of luck to ya.

A bud at work tore his achilles playing basket ball, he was in a cast for 3 months total. It was supposed to take 2 months but he got impatient and tried to ride a bike, bad move.

That can't be any fun at all.

I remember seeing the video of Misty May Treanor when she was practicing her dance routine for DWTS...... you could hear that damn thing snap! OUCH......

Guy at work did his about 3 weekends ago, got a little too into it on stage during music fest here in ABE where his band was playing. He tried to 'walk it off' and as a result threw his opposite knee out of wack from compensating. Now he's wearing short to work and living with hot and cold packs all day.
He's my age, late 50's, just won't admit he has to warm up first before starting that crap.

I got lucky didnt tear mine but strained it some how. Hurt like hell and kept me from being 100 percent at work because it was my driving foot.

There are some things we all learn to 'walk off' or 'tough out'... unfortunately I would suggest a torn Achilles tendon is NOT one of those.
I hurt it as a kid, bad, and it took me a full year of wearing shoes prescribed by my Dr, before I could run properly. Had to have 'lifts' in the heel, a kind of pad that raised my heel just a bit so the tendon wasn't stretched anymore then it normally was. Kept me from 'compensating' too much with the other leg.

I am all for 'walking it off' but if you want the full use of that leg in the future, atleast listen to what the guy has to say.

I was doing speed and agility drills at a high performace training facility and the guy in front of me tore his. We had 15 sec high knees (whistle blows) 15 sec knee to chest jumps (whistle blows) then take off into full sprint for 40 yards. When the guy takes off to run the guy next in line starts. Well the guy in front of me came off his last jump and went to go take off and we heard a loud POP, sounded like if you bang your cleats together to get the mud off. He went straight to the floor but he was pissed because he thought I kicked him. He said it felt like someone hit him in the back of the leg. He was out for a good 6 months I would say. Good news was it was expected to be a full recovery. Take your time and don't rush the recovery, its not worth dealing with it and not being 100% for the rest of your life.

I'm already using the $500 orthotics, but it just keeps getting worse. I really don't want it in a cast until after Fall Fling. I wear a splint when I sleep. What a pain.

This getting old crap is for the birds.

I kinda agree, getting old sucks, I had chest pains last week around 0500, tried to 'tough it out' for an hour or so, finally woke the wife up and said I needed to hit the ER. So I did the ambulance thing.
Short version, two days, cat scans, blood every 4 hours, catheter up the artery for a look see into the heart. Came out clean, they still don't know what the chest pain was. Now I'm on cholesterol lowering drug, never did find out what my level was yet, now they just put you on by default.
<sigh> I guess gone are the days of cheese steaks and fries, meatball Parmesan and pulled pork sandwiches for lunch every other day or so. The upside, instant quit cigarette smoking, doc says 1 cigar a day is ok as well as a beer a day :D :D :D
Interesting side effect, the cigars and just about every thing else tastes better since I stopped smoking cigs, not just a little either, a big taste difference.

I hate to say it but some days I wonder.Well, there's always the Oregon option, But I say stick around.

Wrenching is fun and doesn't take a lot of energy.
Wheeling is a low impact activity.
There's a lot of beautiful country to see.
And coffee's still going to taste good.
