where are you guys finding dexron III. i thought i read somewhere that the aw-4 likes dexron III and running anything different would prob toast it. i tried walmart and i have tried autozone. im thinking since autozone doesnt carry it places like pepboys and advanced auto wont either. they stock dexron IV....

Dexron IV is just the "updated" version of Dexron III. Most of the bottles you'll find now are labeled "Dexron III / IV". You can use Dexron IV just fine.

Whatever you do, just make sure you don't use ATF+4 in the AW4.

I,ve been using the Valvoline DEXIII/ Mercon in the blue jug, Not the synthetic in the red jug-MaxLife,
Found it at Advanced auto and Wally World

That would be fine if the AW4 was a Chrysler trans-it is,nt. More properly a Toyota trans.
Also Chrylser hasn,t made an XJ since 2001-they could care less if the old XJ,s broke down because of transmission failure.Maybe if that happened you would get rid of your 150,000 mile + XJ and get a new Jeep

picked up some castrol dexron IV... says it meets dexron 3 requirements

I guess I am changing my fluid and filter this weekend then. I ran atf+4 in my aw4 due to the bulletin and I have 200k on my xj.

Then you should know that the AW4 doesn,t have a "filter" only a screen to get the big chunks.
