Providence Canyon was great fun. We enjoyed the trip so much we went back again yesterday. The canyon was much more challenging with more snow and ice.
We had three XJ's and a Toyota pickup and all except one made it to the top but it was tough with the ice on the rocks.
At the top we found another XJ parking in "Providence Lake" (Really a seasonal pond) If anyone wants to see it is may be parked in the same spot for the winter.
With no idea who owns this ride we took photos for all to enjoy.

That sucks! I wheel alone a lot. You just have to use common sense! You don't try the same things you would if you were with a group!
Nice pics of the group!

Did you get the VIN or a licence plate number? We should hurry and help this guy out if we can. I'm willing to go spend an evening/night up there getting it out.

dont know. the problem is that if one gets a "hit" (stolen) through UCJIS-Utah Criminal Justice Information System (NCIC), you have 10 minutes to enter info on the situation into the system. if not, you get a notice and you have another 10 min. if still no, you get a notice again and the stuation is upchanneled to a higher agency. the system wants stuff like location, suspects, victims, conditions, and a lot of detailed info. if the situation isnt handled properly, it could potentially ruin a case (improper recovery, contamination etc). not to mention UCJIS is for official purposes only.
i would contact the agency that has jurisdiction and let them run it so that if it does hit, they can try to send an officer up there to do the call in and paperwork.

I believe our law enforcement people know it is/was there because in the driver side window was a citation. Couldn't read it without getting wet but my bet was that the parking meter had expired and he didn't have another quarter.

Funny story...so I'm at my parents house for Halloween last night, and I'm listening to my nephew tell the fam about his hunting excursion a few days ago. Finally he gets to the part where he tells us about where his buddy, who was driving a Jeep, is crossing an open area when it suddenly busts through the ice and turns into a "submarine". So this gets my attention right away, having seen the pics on this thread already. So I ask him: was it a Cherokee? "Yes". Was it Green? "Well yeah". Was this up at Providence? "Yeah, how did you know"? So I show him the pics, and his mouth drops, and he shakes his head, "that's it dude", he says.
After hearing his story, it's some-what understandable, although TOTALLY avoidable. Apparantly they were following 4-wheeler tracks, and at the time the snow was pretty deep, and visiblity wasn't too good. Well I guess these tracks crossed over the pond, and they follow them, and as I recall an XJ is still heavier than a Quad, well do the math...XJ into the pond...ooops! So being that they were by themselves (another mistake), they had to "hoof" it, down to where they finally get cell service, and make a call.
So I guess they've been up a couple of times with a truck and chain, and have tried to get it out to no avail. I told my nephew to let me know, and if it's still there Saturday I would try and round a few guys up to give it a try. It would at least be a good excuse to get out and wheel a bit. If anyone's interested in a "recovery" mission, (and it's still there), I'm sure the guy would appreciate the help. I'll post up tomorrow or Friday with a time and place, and anyone that's willing is welcome to come!

You're going to need a least 2 rigs with winches, a few more as anchors because you'll have limited traction, long straps, shovel, pick, a change of clothes and a large fire to warm up your buddy after he gets wet hooking up straps.....and a raft.
After you get it out, how do you plan on getting it down the canyon? It'll be a coin toss that it will fire, even after you dry out the distributor which may be submerged not to mentioned the waterlogged wiring in the interior.
Hopefully some !*#$&@# hasn't trashed it by the weekend..........seen too many stuck rigs wind up as target practice or a bonfire for drunk, ignorant, disrespectful punks.
BTW, might want to link this to RME for some additional Cache Valley assistance.

All of these are valid points...as I don't have several rigs at my diposal, and don't own a winch myself, I was putting feelers out for anyone who has experience/available vehicle wanting something to do. I don't personally know the kid, never even met him, and I've never been up to that area before, so what you say sounds very probable. My thought was heading up there, and checking it out, seeing what, if anything could be done.Could be a total loss by now, who knows. I just wanted to try and get it out, I like a challenge, what he does with it from there could be his own prob. I can most likely round up 2 or 3 Jeeps/trucks, but that might be like bringing a knife to a gun-fight. But getting 2 or 3 other vehicles stuck aren't on the docket for me either, all I know is what I can see in the pictures, and that's not much!
Thanks for the info/advice!

I'm in with my TJ. I have a 9000 lb winch too. Let's throw something together tonight so we can head out tomorrow. Just checked the weather and Providence city should stay above freezing all night. Hopefully it will be warm enough at higher elevations too.

i would love to help but the wife just started work this week and is having a hard time adjusting. i was wondering where providence is and about how long on the trail to/from extraction site? i know the recovery time will vary depending on how stuck it is. just trying to talk the wife into agreeing to watch the baby all day (last couple days ive been playing Mr Mom)/ or coming with me.

I just got the word over the wire...Green XJ has been saved, aparently our submarine commander knew someone with a truck, (maybe two) and a winch. I don't know any details really, just through the grapevine they got it. That's kinda too bad, I just bought a winch today, I needed one anyways but it's always good to justify these things.
Thanks everyone who was up for this: Deadeye, Stewie, Ryan. I'm thinking about going up anyways just for fun though, maybe tomorrow afternoon or Sunday, anyone game?
