Ummm... Ok? Trans code?

Well I'm kind of confused at how my Jeep has been acting lately. It's been sitting in my driveway for about a week now, it needs a new alternator. But other than that drives great. So I decided to pull the codes today before I went to the yard and got a new alternator, and was suprised what came up.

p0743, Torque Converter Ckt. It has been shifting kind of funky, and doesn't go into overdrive, so maybe this is related (I hope). I checked the fluid, which was replaced along with the filter about 2 weeks ago. Golden. Looks like new still, no burnt smell, correct level. I did search, but it seems like no one fixed it, they just reset the comp and it slowly faded out. Any ideas?? Could it be a bad TCM?

A simple GOOGLE search using Jeep P0743 as your search terms finds that the Lockup Solenoid probably needs to be replaced. Consulting the diagnostic section of your Factory Service Manual will provide more testing and service information.

If you search around here some more, there is a thread on how to check them outside the trans instead of dropping the pan.

I have the same problem but it is intermittent. CEL will be on for a week or 2 then it will go off for 3 months.

If I recall, the only place I could find them on the web was at Mopar parts America. They were around $100.00 ea.

http://www.transonline.com/transdigest/magazines/1997-10/Shift Pointers/index.html for some diagnostic info, although the connector at the TCU will be different for 1997+. You didn't mention what year you're talking about.

For replacement solenoids, here is the cheapest I've found. http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=996259. The set of three is $148, or $70 each.

Great info... Thanks!!

But if I recall correctly, the wires on the solenoids from Trans Parts USA had to be slightly modified, no?? Something about the ground....

Wait............ The OEM units didn't have a ground wire... The ones from Trans Parts USA do, but you simply have to attach the wire to the screw that holds the solenoid in.... Does that sound right??

Thanks again for the info....

Yes some of them are a bit different. Checkout http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/97420K.html. You can see the extra wire that needs to go under the bolt in this picture. There is also a pigtail with a connector instead of the wiring plugging directly into the solenoid as well. The picture at http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/Solenoid_kit_A340E_1985_on_p/940-00094393a.htm looks just like oem.

Yea, but it's also been slipping for some time. Could this be related? If so, I'll gladly shell out 180 clams for it to stop. But if the clutch discs are on their way out anyhow, I'd rather just go manual.
