View Full Version : Adopt a newb.

I had mentioned this after oh nine wf, and I still think it's something that we should explore and have a brain stomping, er, stroming session here...
I think that the vets should take under their wing atendees that are first time w/fers. This may set alot of them at ease of showing up with all of us a-hole midwest bullies if they have a friend to talk to before, and to hold their hands on the trails and at the fire..

Dan, I still am in favor of this as well. I think it would be beneficial if some of WF newbies had someone to help them out and show them around. And it would definatly make some of them a bit more at ease at the campfire if they knew someone or had someone to hang out with (for the non-social butterfly types), kind of like a "Big Brother" in a fraternity. With that being said, bring on the sheep! :D

I was a newb last year and really yall made me feel pretty comfy that I really didn't need much guidance.
But you really have to just talk to people. We don't bite.
AN easy grondbreaking subject is ofcourse his/her Jeep. LOL Everyone loves talking about there heep.

I can volunteer here as well.
I may suggest that this program be offered to everyone, but a Big Brother would only be assigned after a pre-registration is Paid.
You may want to have a cut-off date as well, so as not to cause a lot of confusion at the last minute too close to the event.

Closer to D-Day, I'll post that all volunteers and noobs post up in a dedicated thread. Then, we(me/WF staff/BOD)or Dan :D............. can match everyone up.

Mike, I have the sheep covered for this year...seriously...
This is only my 3rd WF and I still feel like some what of a newbie to some things, but more then willing to step up where needed. And I can say that if you dont fully partake in the camp fire your first year, your still a newbie the second year :D Mike gently hazed me about my less then stellar first year performace (or lack there of) at the camp fire...so JJ and I had to be the last ones standing this year...even after Mac"frolicking like an epileptic goat"Gyver was thrashing in the straw :D:D

I like having a big group like WF 09 and once a lot of these guys see what NAXJA is really about they tend to pony up. I noticed an increase in Red from the last WF. So making it "members only" will hurt future WF.
Isn't there a discount or something if we are Red.

so, what's being said is that I should not feel that I need to pay my dues cuz I can get all the bene's other than the den for no money.

attending wf, or any event, should be left open to nonmembers, if they have a sponsor. and if they don't personally know anyone, there's always someone that will 'sponsor'.
I'm talking more of the 'personal guide for trails and fire' should be offered to members only.
XJ&CHZ4ME
August 19th, 2009, 13:44
I see where Rob and Dan are both coming from. Maybe I am over simplifying it, but maybe the adoption program should be available to those who register for WF, and the adoption program is a perk of the paid admission to WF? If it is just some stragglers that come to WF but dont want to buck up the WF fees but want to take advantage of the perks/group runs etc...then no. Maybe after I have a few drinks this evening I will come up with even more incoheirent ramblings.....

To me, this particular issue is not about the money. I don't want to make anyone feel obligated to join. I want them to join because they want to. The ones that join because they want to, will likely be the more productive members and want to be involved. We all know that this is an awesome group of individuals to be associated with. Once the newbies get a taste of it, they'll likely want to be part of the group......and, if not.....so be it. At least they gave it a whirl and, we can hound them to no end here on teh forums. :D I know there were several that joined after WF. They liked what they seen at WF and wanted to be a part of it.

I'm pretty sure a mod should remove the formerly broken image... I'm getting a rather bad image now. I'm pretty sure that kind of thing wouldn't even fly in the Den :spin1:
EDIT: and this, folks, is why we should always rehost the image on photobucket or imageshack before hotlinking it here... I'm also guilty of this occasionally.

Hot linking is posting images that are hosted on a website where they were originally posted.
Lets say I wanted to post an image I found on www.msnbc.com. I COULD just make use the [img] code to host it like [img]www.msnbc.com[img].
That is called hotlinking because you have posted the image directly off of the original website. People get angry about this because it uses up lots of bandwidth that they are paying for.
So in the future host an image you want to post on a site like photobucket.

Another thing that happens is like what apparently happened here. The original image is removed and replaced with something else that has the same URL.

Just get a photobucket account and go to the TEST forum and play around with images. Its a steep learning curve I guess...

Wait, the image I tried to post was a pelican. What did you guys actually see?
I guess I need to be more careful with those picture things.
And vincepru, I'm 22 as well. I guess it's not just you.

your machine will "store" the image in your cache.
ours will see the image as it is.

x2 on that. Turn off browser caching of open this page in a different browser completely. It should show the true image then.

The image it turned into was an image of... uh... things I'm not attracted to, doing things I don't particularly want to witness ever again. With the text "hotlinking is for fags" as a banner below it. You get the idea.
Problems with hotlinking:
* eats up bandwidth for the site you're linking to - the real reason people get mad about it. I've seen people get ten thousand dollar bills for bandwidth usage in ONE MONTH before because they went over their limit from people hotlinking. Their normal bill was on the order of 25 dollars a month.
* as we saw here, if someone doesn't like it, they can change the file you're linking to... to whatever they want.
How to avoid it:
* take the url you were going to use in your image post
* go to imageshack.us
* check the "url" box above the text entry field
* paste in the url you were going to use
* press "host it!"
ImageShack's server will grab the pic you were going to hotlink and put it on their server - they host pictures for free and allow hotlinking.
* Paste the code from the box "thumbnail for forums (1)" into your post - it writes the image tags and everything for you, and even makes a neat clickable thumbnail using a URL tag and another IMG tag.
