i want to do a sye on my 91 xj with a 242. i bought some parts used but i'm not sure if i have everything i need to use a front driveshaft off another xj in the rear. the guy sent me the yoke to go on the output of the t-case and an adapter for the yoke so a stock front driveshaft will bolt up. do i need to cut the output shaft and get a new shorter tailcone? what all do i need to do here?

Great Thread on doing a J Yard SYE and Front Driveshaft:

This is Dave41079's Setup.

Iron Rock 4x4's SYE and Front Driveshaft can be found here:

Here is their PDF on doing a SYE and a Front Driveshaft.

Input shaft has absolutely nothing to do with it!

You still have to have the 3 bolt adapter flange/seal.

do you mean the purple thing in this link http://www.rubiconexpress.com/JeepParts/Product.aspx?part=RE1801
i don't really see how that will allow the yoke to seal in the transfer case?

That is a new flange/seal as RCP said, that seals to the output shaft, not the yoke.

Right now, if you pull your rear driveshaft, the yoke will come out of the t-case, and since the tailcone seals on the yoke, it will leak out all the fluid. That purple thing is so it will seal to the output shaft, as the new yoke (now that silver flange in your picture) will no longer extended into the transfercase, which would mean your t-case wouldn't be sealed.

Thanks. I do know that Input Shafts and Output Shafts are not the same thing. I was only Posting that if the NP231J has 2 different Input Shaft Sizes it may be Logical to think NP231s "maybe" have 2 different Output Shaft Sizes. I do not know if the Input Shafts corresponding Output Shaft would have been 27 Spline or not. There are three Variations of the NP 231J and two different Output Shaft Seals for '88 to '06 and I personally have no idea what would a Pre '88 Transfer Case might have.

All I know is the Jeeps NP231 (NP231J, J is for Jeep) has 2 Different Output Shaft Seals; One for 1988-95 and one Output Shaft Seal for 1994-06.

That is why I used the word "maybe" in my previous Post.

Sorry for my Presumption of People being able to read my Mind. Hope that explains why I posted that way.

The flange you have is for the newer style transfer case. You need the older style flange (the silver part in your previous post). From what I see in the ad site you posted you will need the flange & seal kit for the older style case, as there is no way to seal the case with that flange.I believe the seal kit for the older case comes with a replacement tail housing & seal & you will need the longer flange spline to seal to. Read a little further down on the ad you posted & I think it will be self explanitory.
