As with every big trip, there are always projects getting tied up or new things added to peoples rigs, so what kind of projects (realistic or not :D) do you all have going on? I mean, come on, we have like 7 months to get things done and Christmas for all of those extra goodies etc...
I am going to complete my tail light boxes and pretty much leave evreything else alone (yeah right) unless something breaks between now and then....:D

* put new wheels/tires on Jeep, possibly throw a smallish spacer+shackle lift in
* wire up the CB the rest of the way
* build front/rear bumpers...
* drive.
* (non critical) get the OHC and its temp sensor installed, get the SYE done.

OK, as if I did not have enough going on at home/farm I have taken on a new project. I am going to pick up this weekend a 21' trailer that is a GN and has a small platform over the tongue. It appears to have beena camper of sorts, or the begining of a project at one time that wa abandoned. It has 2x8 main runners and decent cross bracing as well as brakes on the axles. I am going to do my best to reinforce the frame some more and deck it with 4x8 plate steel and then on the upper deck I am going to put plate steel on it and a small railing around it to haul coolers, tires parts etc. Now for teh grand daddy of the project, i am goingto see if I can mount a pop-up camper sideways across the front of the main deck. I know this was done on Xtreme4x4 blah blah blah, but I am doing it in the means of Xtreme Farm Fabrication :farmer: :D The campers are 6'8" and the flat on the trailer is 21', so I should have just enough room on the deck that I can get the XJ and camper mounted up. So, now I need to get it home and start the basic frame supporting and then will move on to decking and then hope to have the camper on it by Winterfest. Wish me luck.....scratch that, I am guided by a force much greater then luck......

I figured I'd let Mike sleep in the "double" bed. I'll take the couch. The real reason for getting it is it will be warm. My Uncle uses a small milkhouse heater in it & said at 25 outside it stays around 65 inside with the heater on low.

Also, decision on gearing and axle was made... I went to the junkyard and as usual there were no 2.5L XJs. So I went to the Ford Exploder section and yanked an 8.8 with 4.10s out of a C4C vehicle. Now I just need to weld brackets and stuff onto it, get my SYE done (and probably now a custom driveshaft... sigh! add to the list!), and pick up and regear an hpd30 to match - since this is my DD, I'm going to get a new front axle to work on while I drive on my original, then swap em out.

the list is growing more than it's shrinking...
figure out what to do about a rear driveshaft once the 8.8 goes in (probably retubing a stock front XJ DS, or maybe an explorer/blazer front DS, have heard those fit)
put the brackets on the 8.8
regear new d30, weld new brackets on new d30
pick up new rims with less backspacing and hopefully new tires (32s or maybe used 33s)
bolt in new axles, install new rear DS, do SYE
get an alignment
bolt the fire extinguisher into the jeep
build and install front bumper with recovery points...
install new seats
finish CB install
run the cabling for my OBA properly so I stop blowing the fuse for my cigarette lighter :gee:
I think that's about it... whew

My stock driveshaft fit with my 8.8. I never got around to an SYE. Just put a 1310-1330 joint on the end of it and bolted it to the 8.8 with the ford adapter.
I don't know if you're going to do it all at once or in steps, but your stock one will get you back on the road if you're doing one thing at a time.
kastein
December 2nd, 2009, 14:26
Well, I'm hoping to do it all at once - thus why I'm regearing and prepping all the new axles and then installing them. I've got a flange to 1310 adapter sitting on my doorstep right now according to UPS...
Curious, did you switch from a d35 or an 8.25 to an 8.8? And how much lift do you have? All the docs I can find say that a d35 has about 1" shorter pinion than an 8.25 or d44, and an 8.8 apparently has a pinion very close in length to a d35, so I'm just worried that a hack-n-tap SYE on my XJ with 3.5" of lift is going to run out of travel since the shaft is rumored to be ideally sized for an 8.25.
Really, I just need to do the math before I pull the axles.
RedHeep
December 2nd, 2009, 14:49
I replaced a D35. It was practically bolt in because the adapter gives you some length.
If you're going to get a new driveshaft, I would wait until you had the new axle in and the SYE done and then measure for the driveshaft. That's the best way to do it and you'll get the right shaft the first time.

however im skeptical that the tcase is actually bad, because ive never had an issue with it before, and i really havent beat on my rig for something like a chain to start slipping in it. when i got the SYE installed everything seemed ok in there, and it never gave me problems before. spoke to tyler about it, he said it could be my linkage that got messed up and it wont engage all the way. i will inspect it further once it warms up a bit.

right on man! i just wish i could take a look inside to see whats really wrong with it, i would hate to waste money on a part that doesnt need replacing.

Pop your linkage off of the t'case shift lever. Manually shift the case into Full Time and try to drive it. If it works fine, adjust your linkage to match. If not, stick a fork in it.

I ran over the sewer grate in my yard trying to get off the street with wet ground...came in to hot to control...caught the grate and busted a belt...with 14k pounds...had to unload the two jeeps and then could move it with an empty trailer...
i think that i justified the two place redheep...i used it btw 6 to 8 times this year...

anything that would be an upgrade for the 242? i figured if im gonna spend a couple hundred on a tcase, i can see if i can just put a beefier one in it instead of the 242.

i wouldn't say that I hate bumper pull...just not a big fan...it works, and it was affordable, i actually prefer to tow bumper pull because i think its more predictable than gooseneck...that said i've done lots more bumper pullin than i have gooseneck pullin...

I would just find a JY replacement and drop it in. Since you are working with a 242, you can't upgrade to a TeraLow. An Atlas would be $$. A 241 would take some fab work, but would be an option.

yeah atlas is wayyy over my spending range. i think a used 242 is the best bet i guess. although i have to pull out my SYE and swap it, no idea how to do it (had a shop "on and off road" in ohio do it)

i really know nothing about the 231 tcase other than i would not have 4wheel part time anymore and i would have to buy a new SYE, which i cannot afford since the one in there is practically brand new

A SYE swap would be pretty easy, as long as the output shaft is ok. If you're close to Tyler, I'm sure he would help you out.
Shop around on the classifieds, other forums (JF, JU, etc). You may find a 231 equipped with a SYE for around the same price as a stock 231/242.

that is no crap, I was finishing up my long arms last year about 24 hours before departure and Collin literally pulled an all nighter working on his rig and then drove all the way out there (well, all but the last hour where Jerm had to drive b/c Collin started to asleep at the wheel :D)
That was good stuff. I'm going to hope the same doesn't happen this year. Sleep is NOT overrated before an all day road trip...

yeah we were planning on building a rear bumper and swingout, but now it looks like were gonna have to figure out how to do the SYE. hes never done it on a 242 and ive never touched my tcase or anything before so i have no idea whats going on in there.

Front axle seal is leaking
Front inner hub bearings make noise with the hubs locked
Oil pressure gauge still doesn't work right from the swap
Weld frame stiffeners in
Swap my OT gas tank skid in
Move the rear axle back to the last hole on the perches
Install the remote box for my CB, swap the 3 foot antenna and tune
Swap battery cables and ANL fuse box in
Swap yellow top in
Move TMax winch from AJ's bumper to Detours bumper
Install lower door bars and tube from the top to the C-pillar
Shorten the draglink and get an alignment
Weld in front swaybar mounts
Swap Durango steering box in
Replace rear shackles with something shorter
Install front limit straps and bumpstops
Man, the list got longer when I got home and walked around the Jeep for the first time in 6 months. I need to get to work.
Draglink is done. Took 1/2" out of it, got the steering wheel centered and the trackbar put back to the right length. I'm still up against it with the rod ends, but I think it will be ok. Turns a lot better now. I need to get it on an alignment machine and check the numbers. I have very little return to center.
Shackle boxes are sitting in the living room. Going to take off the boomerang shackles and use the RE ones on the '91.
Tomorrow the front hubs come apart for grease and servicing and I'm going to get the axle moved back. It's nice working in a clean garage for a change.

Heres a list I WANT to do before the WF
-Spare tire on a correct backspaced rim
-get rid of the D35 for a 8.25 OR Ford 8.8
-get doors back on it
-fix the battery parasitic draw
-install a cheap cb
-hood pins
-snorkel made into the cowl
-remove and discard the rear seats
-raise the gas tank and build a sort of a spare tire holder on top of that along small boxes made on the sides if there's any room to allow
-make a orgazation in place where the rear seat originally went for my tools, spare driveshafts, axle shafts, cooler, etc etc
-redo the rock sliders for cage
-OBA using the A/C compressor
-redo the front bumper for the cage
-build a cage!
so far in the progress..
-a 8.25 should be coming in in near future
-hood pins kit purchased
-one side of the rock sliders is in the progress
-i have my hand on a set of doors, but dont have them yet, hopefully soon
needs more tubes and right diesets for the bender for the tubes then i can actually make some good progress

I found out last year: make your WF to-do list, cut it in half, then cut it in half again because there's just not enough time to get it all done. :(
Spent the past month or so pulling everything off the motor to put on new heads (old ones overheated and warped), change gaskets, new radiator, etc. Everything is done now but the exhaust. So...
- load Jeep on trailer, go to exhaust shop for exhaust fab work
- change transmission pan gasket and filter
- swap NP249 out for NP231 w/ SYE, hope I don't botch that up
- put in order to RC for lift kit (was going to use junkyard springs and hack it together but time is running out) and wait for it to arrive
- break bolts, curse, drink beer, regain composure, install lift
My only optional to-do is throwing a locker in the crap Dana 35. An 8.8 was on the original list, but see my note about cutting the list in half twice :D
Addendum: based on my 1 year of WF experience, the only thing I *NEED* to do is buy a few cases of beer, some frozen turkeys, show up, and find an open seat!
