Has anyone done a build thread on a at home tire carrier for there xj. I have looked for many hours and can't seem to find anything. I'm having trouble figuring out what to use for the pivit point off the bumper I have everyrthing else to do this with and a great idea an the final look just nothing that is strong enough for the weight of the tire and steel to swing on also do u think I need to reenforce the stock bumper for this build any help would be great thanks

use a trailer spindle, and if you are using the stock bumper or brackets i would reinforce

check out ebay they have some "hinge kits" its the trailer spindle but it comes will all the crap you need to make it work

Two tabs, a hole through the end of the swingout, and a big bolt through it all. No bearings, no bushings, just a simple homemade hinge. Has been holding a 37" tire with a Ford spindle/brake rotor assembly on it for 6 years...and a 33" for about 5 years prior to that. I just replaced the bolt last Summer to freshen things up. Has worked fine and been very effective for being so simple.

yes, many on here have and have writen about it. search for "rear bumper tire carrier" in modified tech. i am in the process of building one myself.

i took ideas from many sources including:
mounting system from http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=993533&highlight=rear+bumper+tire+carrier
basic shape from http://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost.php?p=243644292&postcount=7
this latch http://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost.php?p=244268793&postcount=13
latch angle/orientation like similar to http://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost.php?p=244279247&postcount=52

my shackle tabs are three pieces of 1/4" steel welded together to be 3/4" thick. the middle piece is part of the 2x4 box that goes through the frame rail and the other pieces sandwich that with lots of weld surface area. i have also added rear quarter pannel sliders to the bumper.

Be very wary on the tire carrier hinge spindles. They have some known issues with snapping off due to quality control problems. We used to use them and were very careful about how we installed them, all welding was done with pre/post heating and after 8 years of building bumpers never a single failure. Then 2 failed, one was 4 years old, the other was 6 months. Both had crystalline cracks going about 60% through the diameter followed by a clean break.

I completely stopped building any tire carrier bumpers until I was satisfied 100% with the hinge setup, which I ended up designing myself. My only wish is that I would have done it years ago, the difference in strength is night and day. One of the few on the market that provides support to the top of the hinge, not just the bottom.

yeah your new setup is beefy for sure, and its pretty sweet that you sell it individually as a part... if you had it out when i built mine i would have done it differently to accommodate it

Yep, the school solution is a trailer spindle. It doesnt work.

Mine is 1.25" and it just broke. Thats 3 for 3 on local bumpers that I personally know of. Mine lasted longest at about 3-4 years, but its been cracked for along time based on post mortem. The other 2 didnt get past 2 years.

wow... i think i am going to put a safety cable or something that attaches from my tire to the roof rack to make sure it doesnt become a projectile in the event of spindle failure.

currently a trailer spindle off of an old trailer... with a piece of climbing rope attaching my tire to the roof rack just in case... as of right now i am planning on revamping the bumper, and moving the whole thing inward, and moving the swingout from the top to the front face and using some tabs and bearings and a grade 8 or even a f911 bolt as the hinge. i really dont like the prospect of sporadic failure and losing my tire on the highway.

yea ive got a couple 1 inch bearings here at work i am thinking about using. And my bumper is set so colse to the body i am going to have to put it on the face. Thought about doing a swing down. instead of out though too. But idk yet

thats the other thing i was thinking of... i think swing down is probably the strongest method to be had... heres something i found: http://shop.jeeptubes.com/product.sc?productId=31&categoryId=-1http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f37/rear-swing-down-tire-carrier-942864/
