I have a 96 XJ with a 4.5inch Trailmaster lift. I am getting a semi huge cluncking sound in the front. Alot of people have said it is the control arm bushings, fair enough i have the new upper and lower control arms to put on ..my question is are the bushings on the axel end for the uppper control arms are they pressed in or can then just be replaced?? also i am looking for a part number or someone that sells these ...

The axle bushings are pressed in. I used a ball joint remover to remove them, and to install them. HTH. They are roughly $5-$7 dollars at Shucks/Checker/Kragen. Federal Mogul IIRC.

10 bucks for bushings, i went to a dealer today and they told me 115 bucks for 2 new bushings...?? and forgive me but what is Shucks/Checker/Kragen and Federal Mogul IIRC?

i have been reading alot in the forum and people are saying a cluncking sound could come from the track bar?? i am affraid of replacing the control arms upper and lower and still having the clunk....

Schucks/Checker/Kragen are a chain of autopart stores, throughout the US. The same company, just different names.

Federal Mogul is a company that makes parts for cars and trucks alike.

IIRC= If I Recall Correctly, meaning I think that they were Federal Mogul bushings, but know they were difinitly sold at Schucks.

But, I think that they are the TRW ones now.

Or spring for Moog. Good stuff IMO.

Either way, the Stealership is just that. Go to a local parts store, they should have what you are looking for.

You are getting ahead of yourself- identify where the clunk is coming from before buying parts! Have somebody rock the steering wheel back and forth, while you watch for movement where there shouldn't be any (typically the upper end of the track bar, sliding in the mount (tighten it) or the tie-rod part sloppy internally (replace the track bar). On our three XJs, I have replaced 4 track bars and one XJ was done just before I bought it. Only one XJ needed new control arm bushings. Try a search here before you do it- there are some irritating challenges (the axle moves/tough to reinstall the control arm- do one at a time).

Upper axle and CA bushings.
http://www.quadratec.com/products/56015_100.htm

Check for any play in the front end connecitons. Re-torque all bolts. Check u-joints axle and drive line.

Have someone switch between forward and reverse, turn the steering wheel... listne and watch for any play.
