so im thinking about painting the TJ a green color like yellaheeps. ive looked into the project and it seems like a few people have done it with success just using the rattle can "grabber green" engine enamel.

the clear coat on my TJ is looking like hell, the doors dont match the rest of the paint, and its got scratches everywhere and just looks like its seen better days.

I know there are alot of you on here who have done rattle can paint jobs so im wondering what the process is...? sand it all down to metal? sand it down past clear coat and prime? how many coats? wet sanding?

gloss or flat finish?

i really want to do this, but not if its going to be a nightmare.

thats the color im going for... btw. and the color on my tj right now is a dark green.

Grabber green was the only color at the store that I really liked when it came to painting my stroker block.

Don't have one of it completed but I also used a bronze color, which I thought was more charcoal-ish by the cap. They ended up looking pretty good together.

Dude, and I not just trying to be an ass, but picture that "goose shite" (as jimgrms called it) green TJ lowered off of the monster lift and 37's its sitting on and down to your 32's -- tell me you won't be emphasizing the "cheerleader" qualities of your TJ with that color scheme... Troys truggy gets away with it because it is 90% tube and oozing testosterone (and grease) from every pore. If you have a mondo build in mind as well, then go for it, otherwise, forest green is cool... I thought you were all ready to re-shoot your doors to match when you called me about removing herc the other day??:looney:

i was... but then i went a little crazy with the flapper disk and chewed up some of the good metal underneath the hercu-crap. So i just re shot them with bed liner and painted them to match the rest of the jeep. Got the paint to match the emerald green on the jeep right now. In my opinion, it looks decent, but id rather have a color that pops and after much research, it looks pretty easy to do a driveway paint job. im also thinking a drab green army look in flat .

grabber green is a sick colo i dont care what anybody says! but if your guna do a green color you should use a satin or flat paint, IMHO

You think a "decent" driveway paint job is easy? Look over this guy's thread on having painted his XJ...... Sounds like he's regretting all the work and prep he put into it - disappointing results: (starts around page 6)

I thought this TJ was supposed to be a flipper? Do you think putting your personal preference paint color on it is gonna help sell it? Painting it that "goose crap" green or flat OD or whatever is going to limit your field of potential buyers.

If you must paint it...... do the light prep yourself. Get 1000 grit and get into the edges, corners, creases real good, and then light scuff the entire body, strip the trim and parts you don't want painted off it, then run it down to MAACO. $300 will get you a decent paint job for the investment.

But hey, it's a TJ...... ya can't fawk it up much more than it was from the factory right? :D

I read the thread title wrong...

I was picturing a lime green driveway paint job. And thinking "Man, his neighbors are gonna pop a vessel when they see that!" :D

I've said before that lawns are a waste of time & money... My plan was to pave over mine and paint it green -maybe not lime- so when I read it, I though I had a long-lost twin brother out there, or probably just another tard like me.

Anyhow spraybomb fluro lime (or others) is very prone to fading in sunlight... and is quite 'flat'. Spraybomb clearcoat fairly well attacks it too. OTOH it's an effect that the chopper-dudes were paying big-bux for some time ago. :dunno:

FWIW yellowXJ (Travis from SEC) painted his American LaFrance green. It was more of a loud yellow, and not very sexy IMO (not killer lime) I have a riding suit that is a similar fugly shade (Old Hi-Viz) The newer Hi-Viz is the Killer Lime)

I agree with Troy, do the self prep & partial masking... then let Maaco or Schwab (or even a local indie shop maybe) hit it in your favorite flavor. I've done several paintjobs with a cup and a couple with spraybomb. No real cost savings over a cup shot and bombs lay a shitty-dry pattern for panels.

Check out 1996(?) Jeep XJ Citroen Metallic. I think it is a one-year-only deal, and I don't think it came on any other Jeeps (YJs and ZJs had Moss and Emerald, but not the Groovy Green Citroen.)

Also look at DuPont and House of Kolor charts for some ideas. A paint shop can tweak those too, then whoever sprays it.

Johnathon I thought you were going to sell that thing in a couple of months, or is it growing on the wife? (Did you get married yet?) If so, why sink money into it? It's a Jeep, it's supposed to be scratched and dented.

ill admit, the hunk of shit is starting to grow on me. the fiance still hates driving in it with the top off. i think the only reason i like it is because there are tons of options for upgrading and such. my weekends consist of finding sh*t to tinker with, so its kept me quite busy.

I think ive decided just to stay with the forest green for now and hold on to this thing for a while. I was looking it over today and it looks like it will be a pain in the as* to paint with a rattle can. Just to many little spots and crevacies, and the whole tub on the interior...

Also, after looking at the link YELLAHEEP posted on here, I think i might just leave it to a pro and just do the prep work.

All that aside... i miss the hell out of my XJ... but word on the street from the guy i sold it to, its just sitting right now because the engine pooped out. Something about an exaust valve and a head gasket seal. So, i am glad i got rid of it before all that happened, but i still miss that thing.

The fiance still has her 01' XJ , so were thinking about doiung something with that eventually....a

as for now, the TJ fills my saturdays and sundays with something to tinker with.
