my 95' xj trans overheated last year, i was pulling more than i should have up a mountain. i then put in a temp gauge, and the stock cooler would let it max out the gauge (over 250*) after driving offroad for about half an hour. i changed the fluid, put in another cooler a while back, it still would get 220 or so on long drives. then a big cooler a couple of months ago, and now it almost never gets over 170. now the wierd part. floor it in reverse and i can spin both (locked) tires, no prob. floor it in drive, we're talking the 19-20 sec 1/4mile kind of slow. funny i can almost visually watch the temp gauge rise when i do this. other than that, the trannie seems fine. no shifting probs or any thing, it just shifts kinda slow.
so i'm pretty sure i have overheated something inside, but the fluid looks fine, and the trannie shows no symptoms of getting ready to fail. i'm trying to figure out what is wrong, and if i should go ahead and replace it, or if there is something else that should be done.
