the diff cover seems blocked in pretty well, do I need to remove other stuff, jack it up, or what?

Remove plug.
Remove all screws except very top - loosen that one.
Put finger in plug hole and pull. Tap across front bulge with rubber mallet as required.
Let drain.
Remove top screw
Remove cover.
It's not really "blocked in" as much as it looks like - I've never needed to remove anything else to get the thing out. And, I only use a gasket (dry) when I put it back on - this makes it easier to remove next time. I don't like to use RTV on "maintenance" gaskets - makes it a pain to clean up the mating surfaces next time.

Done, I had to jack up the drivers side of the body to get the drag link out of the way of the top left bolt
