View Full Version : Anyone up for Naches in August?
TORX
July 10th, 2009, 01:18
I originally planned to head down to the Rubicon in August, but that's not in the cards for this year. So I figure another trip up to Naches would be a good trip.
Would anyone be interested in a trip around the weekends of the 15th or 22nd of August. I'm flexible on dates, but need some time to get the Jeep back up to 100%.
Some other options would be central Oregon, or Liberty. Either way I'm looking to day a three or four day trip somewhere in August.

I too may be in. Ideally we would need someone who knows their way around. As in, we all know how to get to the rocks, but we need someone who can guide on trails such as Kaner, Shoestring, etc.

With that in mind, Is they're a map system of the whole Naches area? and by that i mean, a map with "Trails" listed?

Lyle, Were you driving blind folded? You have been on all of these trails listed above ;) Dustin can help you to double check your nav skills.
Yes, there are plenty of maps available, but that doesn't mean that you should try it without a knowledgeable person in the group. Search under my posts for NW Fest, I posted all of the details of where and how to get maps of the area.

What do you mean by "There isnt a whole hell of alot"?
Can you think of anywhere else in the state or the NW that has half of the trails that are at Naches area? There are way more than you could do in a weekend!

Yeah they have alot of trails, but most of the trails are runable in 2lo. This isn't very fun for me, I love the rocks though.

Lyle, Were you driving blind folded? You have been on all of these trails listed above ;) Dustin can help you to double check your nav skills.
Michael
No blind fold, I was just sitting back letting the people up front (you and Matt W.) do the navigation while I concentrated on what was around me. I didn't get confused until we started running service roads to get to the next trail though. I'm sure that a couple of us with a map could do it, and it's definately worth a try.
I do agree with Alex though. Alot of it was 2low type of stuff, but the first few trails we ran were alot of fun. After hitting the large rock garden area at the top (I can't recall the trail name...), the wheeling seemed to get easier. But, the experience is definately worth it to take those trails around the back of the mountain. I was totally caught off gaurd when we came around the corner and were at the base of the Funny Rocks.
I think one day of running up to the top via Kaner etc., and one day at the rocks would be perfect.

This is what I was getting at Michael.
'Forest Service road' trails are not fun to me.
And, before they closed most of it down, Reiter had alot of trails. Most all were actually challenging/had challenging spots.

Naches has always had enough to keep me busy for the day,but I enjoy the area, depending how "fire Season" goes I plan on heading that way sometime in August ,September,October...day trips from Tacoma.
All trails or loops that a person creates has a mix of everything.
Not all trails lead to the "rocks"..

Naches Trail starts on the FS 70 rd.just out of Greenwater on the west side and ends at the FS 19 rd. in the Little Naches area. I think it`s an easy trail if the weather has been dry. If wet then the first up hill at the start can be ?? for some and then the up hill that goes by a stump or is it a rock on the right side ,after that it`s an easy one .I usually take till past the Government Meadow and cabin to the first road crossing or the second road which is FS 19 it`s down aways turn right ,then left on black top follow to the Kaner Flat area.
You can follow the trail all the way down to it`s end on the FS 19 rd.
We have left the Safeway in Enumclaw ,aired down at the trail head, walked out to the cabin at Gov.Meadow, and followed the trail all the way to it`s end in 4 hrs
The Naches trail is only open from July 15 to Nov 15 .thats why it couldn`t be run at NW Fest.

If you cant afford the extra $100 for gas to get to Oregon and back, then how can you afford to go wheeling at all?
A snapped heater core is easy...
plug the engine side hoses with 3/8" socket extensions, and leave the heater core side open... Done, drive home.

We were up there from Fri-monday. The place is huge, any trail we found could easily run all day. We didnt really have any usable maps but we found moonrocks and a couple other great trails. Awesome place, especially now that we now where to camp and some of the real trails.
I've been trying to find info on a really bad rollover that happened on saturday but have'nt found anything. The story as we heard it goes as, 2 people in a exo'd toyota (I think, really hard to tell) tried running down one of the basketball sized rock fields up there that had to be over 45 degrees and maybe 300 feet in elevation and started going end over end (supposedly nearly 10 times). The driver (we heard) got away with only a few cuts/bruises but the passenger was life flighted out (saw pics of the helicopter). We found the place on sunday and everything was still there (I have a bunch of pics). Absolutely horrible, I really want to follow the story, if you here anything please let me know. I took a ton of pics in case they were needed later.

Truck Drives off mountain from String Trail (4W309)
Manastash Ridge, Washington -
On August 8th, 2009 a guy decides to drive his truck off the 4W309 trail on the ridge to get to the lower part of 4W309 which he could see from the top. This is what we were told by the people in the other rig with them we met earlier on 4W330. They were on their way to look for Search & Recue and had a flat and had to borrow a jack.
Some quad riders in the area where there helping by the time we got there. The quad riders said the driver was in pain but could walk around. The passenger was conscious but could not move. We stayed to help until the Search & Recue got there. We had to guide the helicopter in by phone. The Search & Recue and Forest Rangers on the ground showed up as the helicopter was landing.
We do not know how this story ended. We just hope for the best.
