popping noise with 4wd drive engaged

i have a popping noise when driving in 4wd. i feel a small jerk that accompanies the pop. what can i do to troubleshoot this issue before taking things apart? is this most likely the tcase, front axle or maybe u-joints? this is a '93 with the np231.

edit: i realize "4wd drive" in the title is redundant.

edit part 2: popping noise frequency increases with speed.

Check your front driveshaft ujoints.

Use a very bright light and check for signs of rust from under the caps.
