I'm really tempted to get a PSP before my next deployment...date TBD...

Anyways, what are your opinions on what to get, problems, links, etc...

Thanks in advance,

John

My just turned 12 year old has one and I hate it. The only reason he has it is because of my "ex." The thing keeps him occupied on long drives but it also isolates him from conversation with others. When he is with me I don't allow him to have it unless we're going on a long trip. I guess it depends on how you use it. For kids, I percieve it as a highly addictive, mind numbing toy that one can waste hours on rather than being productively active with others and the world. On the other hand. given the waiting game which sometimes happens when you're in the service it can be a distraction while waiting for things to happen. I understand you can also buy and watch movies on them now but don't quote me on that. Paperbacks are better and a hell of a lot cheaper than the cost of the games the PSP needs to be fed. They are also highly pilferable and you need to be able to charge them. I don't know if this helps you but its just my perspective as a father.

I mainly use mine to listen to music at school. I bought a 1 Gig memory stick for it, so I got a few CDs in it. Battery life is pretty good. I have about 5 games and one movie. It is very hand to have for long trips. Probably one of the most used things I've bought.

If you have l337 skills, you can copy and shrink DVD's to it, run various retro gaming emulators for the SNES, Commodore 64,etc.

Alright, maybe a little more background..

Pending a year long deployment, looking for an all-around entertainment package. I'm looking for something that can do photos, music, games, internet and movies. My original intent was to get an umpteen gig Ipod or Multimedia player but then a buddy showed me this.

From what I understand, you can turn this into several different things, from boombox to whatever..

FWIW, I think that this is something that should not be in the hands of a tween. More along the lines of a teen or adult.

John Now that we've got one, I can see why fans have said it will change handheld players forever. There are tons of games available now, it plugs into a jillion aftermarket toys and it plays full length movies. Definitely not a child's toy although the Western market will consider it so for some time I'm sure. The images are very clear and easy to see in a variety of conditions. It handles still pics, music, videos, has a wireless internet connection and much more.

I think it would be a nice thing to have on a long deployment or trip. The sound levels are not a problem at all if you have some quality headphones or if you get the boombox add-on. By quality phones I mean noise-cancelling ones with the large hardshell that covers your ears.

They are getting cheaper too. I say try one out for a while and you may really like it...
