Intermountain Chapter Spring Moab Run:

Alot of us will be camping somewhere in the sticks instead of in town. Let me know if you want info on the spot.

Final notes:

Thursday:
Hard: Cliffhanger Ewander
Meet at City Market 9am

Easy: Hells Revenge? XJBlue
Meet at City Market 9am

Friday:

Easy: Fins and Things Von -MoabXJeeper
Meet at City Market 9am

Friday Night:

Pot Luck camp cookout. (See below for directions)

Saturday:
Both trails for Saturday will meet at the same spot, see below. 9am
Hard: Behind the Rocks - Handlebars
Easy: Tip Toe Behind the rocks - XJblue

Friday Evening Event: This is a BYOF & BYOC (Bring your own food and Chair)
We just want to hang around the camp fire and hang out. There will be a fire and stove to cook food. If you don't want to bring your food, eat before and come anyways.

Directions:It will be just off the HWY on the Behind the Rocks road...or more accurately where Behind the rocks, Pritchett canyon, Pritchett arch and other trails end.
About 12 miles south of town you will climb a very steep grade. EXAXTLY where the truck passing lane ends you make a right onto the road. We will be somewhere on that road not further then a mile in.
IF you pass the road go to the rest area at the bottom of the hill, turn around and follow those directions back only make a left this time

The Saturday trails will meet at the "Behind the Rocks" trailhead. It's located just off the highway. Go south on the highway. The turn off is right at the bottom of the big hill. If you get to the top of the hill, turn around. You can't miss us. __________________

Actually, the official hotel off season is November 1st to March 1st. Most hotels are a whopping $29.95 per night all winter long. I've gone early november and late Febuary and it's cold, but not too cold. The trails are typically clear, with occasional snowdrifts if you go at the Febuary end of the season.

I seem to recall you saying there wasn't really a cotton problem during the carshow weekend. This last spring run was a week or two later right?

NO, it is not to early to bring it up. If we get it set people will be able to plan ahead make the trip.
If it comes down to a choice between whet we did this year and going back to the car show weekend, I'll vote for the cars show weekend.

Does anyone have next years school calander. Maybe a time when the kids are out.

If the Car Show keeps more people in town,(instead of the trail) that sounds good to me. Last time there were several groups/clubs in town. We were in a bit of a parking lot on Kane Creek.

Ya know...anymore I dont think it matters what weekend you are in Moab. It is getting to be so busy that almost any weekend is going to have several groups in town running trails.

Seems like two years ago when we did it over the car show weekend we still were running into people on the trails.

I say we do it during the Rod Benders (http://www.moab-utah.com/aprilaction/) weekend, it is schedule for April 26-29 Thursday - Sunday. I am guessing that other 4WD clubs will try to avoid this weekend, but we will have to get reservations early due to the number of hot rods that will be there.

By the way that Woody on the left hand side of their page is awesome.

Bringing this to the top. We need to decide on a weekend. April isn't that far away, when you consider the holidays are in the middle. This will give people a target date to get their junk ready, you know modifications (me, Dave and others), new vehicles (Jeff/Ryan maybe) or even that buggy project you may be working on (sorry Bryon). Plus I also have to start thinking of scheduling vacation, my work has us schedule in late Nov for the next year. We also need to think of another cool name for this year. I'll start "IC on the Rocks II" or "IC on the Rocks Part Deux"

The people who camp usually stay at Slickrock or Moab Rim. It's seems about 50/50 split. The last 2 times I stayed at Slickrock and I'm thinking about staying at Moab Rim this time. Alot of people get hotel rooms as well.

No...not at all. In fact if anyone has that one "special" trail they would like to do, I would like to hear about it. Doesn't mean we are going to run it for sure but we need ideas.

I just read an article in a Mag about another group doing Moab. One day in their trip they had what they called an "Adventure" day. Just a free roaming day where people could do what they want.

I thought this might be an interesting idea to try since most people one day go off on thier own anyway.

I beleive I'm in charge of trails, but I'd like to float the idea of doing Golden Spike the first or second day. At the FF we did it on the last day and it was pretty brutal after a week of partying. :) But please if there is a certain trail, please let us know here. Also if your willing to do a great deed and lead a trail, please PM Me.

I agree that it's easier doing the more challenging stuff first and working down into moderate/easy toward the last day. As for trails to run, any of the usual suspects is great, hard to go wrong in Moab. As long as my wife doesn't have to do Moab Rim again we'll be fine. :D

I didn't mean to say most difficult at the beginning. All I ment is that Golden Spike is an extremely long non-stop trail. Running it Saturday after a long week of wheeling was almost too much. To me, running the spike on one of the earlier days would have made it a bit more enjoyable.

Just my opinion but if we are only going to do a couple of trails this year Golden Spike might not be the best one to do. It's just too long.

Not sure it makes any difference. If you break bad on the first day you are going to spend your trip fixing it whether its on a trailer or not. Granted it sucks to get home when you have to drive it but even when I drove mine I felt the same way.

To me there is nothing worse then spending the week in Moab working on my junk.

I've had it suggested that we possibly reduce the amount of days for the spring Moab trip to help facilitate attendance of a Vernal trip over Memorial Day weekend. Instead of Tuesday-Saturday, we would do Thursday-Saturday w/th dinner Friday night. Any opinions? Would reducing the amount of days in Moab help people's chances of making it out to Vernal? Would it matter? Just a thought.

Any comments on this in this thread? Good or bad idea?

I would have to come back on Saturday and could not leave until Wednesday so that would work, maybe few of us could do a short trail Wed afternoon. Friday's best night for the diner, has anybody looked into a place for the diner like the park we had last year?

Kane creek one (Wednesday?) day since the FF run on it didnt get completed, anyone wanna lead?

A day to screw around at area BFE, perhaps, if not I wouldnt mind going to the sand dunes. (Friday)?

Hells Revenge one day, (Saturday?)

Might do Pritchett if everyone can keep their panties on this time.

Trying to weigh options right now. I may need to bring all 4 kids along (and the wife). Which means driving the Suburban and towing the Jeep. I don't have a trailer. Does anyone have something I can rent cheap? Or does someone have a trailer that holds two Jeeps with room to haul mine?

Dangit. I need to get some stuff done to the Jeep too. This is going to be awesome.

Looks like I may be in on this trip. My first Moab run :)

Not a bad thing. Just a thing that requires more planning and an extra vehicle to transport the whole crew. And I have to round up a trailer. I tried to talk my wife into leaving the 5 month old with Grandma. That would solve the whole problem and we could drive just the XJ. She wouldn't go for it. My kids are excited about the trip. My wife hasn't been on a real trail ride yet, but she loves Moab. Should be fun for everyone.

I put a 3rd seat in my XJ. Had 7 seat belts. Fit all six of us when the kids were smaller. Kids loved to go to Moab. I did have to get a roof rack after loosing the cargo space.
I got mine at Upholstery West in Salt Lake City, Utah - http://www.upholsterywest.com/

Looks like maybe the planets might align just right and I may be able to make it down that week. Question for the folks that have been down there over the week of the car show before. I'm probably not going to make it until Thursday evening or so, is there going to be much of a problem finding some decent camp sites? We usually camp at some of the sites in the Sand Flats road area, (Slick Rock, Fins, etc.). Are we going to be too far away from everyone to hook up for trail-runs, dinner, etc.? :dunno:

Looking forward to running some of the trails with everyone...at least the ones in the easy-meduim range. :gee:

Driving a little bit doesn't bother me, Moab is incredible no matter where you're at IMO, now the getting up early part...I guess that's why there's coffee! :speepin:

Any thoughts on if the camp sites are going to be crowded that weekend?

I've never done Porcupine, but I hear its very easy.

Porcupine's a great run, beautiful scenery. We had a stock '01 4Runner tag along w/us in Nov. when we ran it. There are a few spots that might give a n00b some serious pucker factor, but it's doable in a stock to slightly modified rig.

led the Moab Rocks group up there and got stuck behind a TTORA group with a stockish 100 series w/ noob to Moab driver behind the wheel. Luckily we were only going to the overlook and not behind them to the end of the trail. It is easy in a moderate XJ thats for sure.

Besides, I'm not sure why your upset about spike anyways. Unless you have a locker and a little more lift your not going to find many who want to take you on that trail anyways.

Clint took over a job from me because I was sick and tired of dealing with crap just like this. The trails he picked are just fine. They are trails that we have run less then any in Moab and I specifically asked to have Behind the Rocks on the list. If anyone has problems with this take it up with me...not Clint.

Oh and Chris...He wasn't making fun of your jeep...he was exactly right. I don't know how to tell you this without hurting your feelings but there are just some trails you are not set up to do the way your rig sits right now. This isn't a slam on you in anyway...its just the truth. The funny thing is, with the exception of Behind the Rocks there isn't a single one of those trails that you can't handle with your jeep.

Rook1 for your jeep to handle golden spike, you need to have 3 heavy guys on your rear bumper for the golden crack :lickout: and someone to spot you up and down a couple spots and out of body snatcher but it is a long trail notorious for forced late night returns, just wait for the time to be right.

Sweet, you can camp out in the sticks with Ryan and I...
I might just do that. I was thinking of splitting the cost of a hotel room with someone, but a night (or two) out in the sticks with a campfire sounds like a good time. No flares in the fire pit this time (umm cough, cough Cody). :D

Are guys gonna set up a base camp with tents for multiple nights or are you gonna pack up each morning?

>>>edit: Nevermind. I'll just be sleeping in the back of my Heep anyways so it really doesn't matter.

I am considering coming out just for the Saturday Behind the Rocks run. Any of you "camping in the sticks" people want to stay out at the end of Behind the Rocks, where the 24 hour bike race people set up? Somewhere around here...

http://www.fototime.com/A3ED4B403970355/orig.jpg

BTW, one of my buddies from NM did Behind the Rocks last fall on 30's and 3.07's, so it can be done. He had the smallest Jeep by far in our group.
http://www.fototime.com/481778C4FFFBC62/orig.jpg

We ran BTR the same morning NAXJA was scheduled to go. We left early to stay out of the way without realizing the run had been scrubbed. I only made it as far as Upchuck Hill before breaking a leaf spring. I wouldn't mind trying again but I can't take time off work for it so we would be showing up at camp around midnight.

Behind the rocks is a nice place to camp and I seriously thought about it but I want to be a little closer to town.

Two places I have thought about. One is out on the Kane Creek Rd. Right after you leave the stupid Colorado river area...right before you get to the Kane Creek crossing, where the trail to Kane Creek starts there is a nice camp spot on the right side of the road.

Another place is up north of town a little further...but Im not sure about exactly where yet.

My parents are now talking about bringin their RV down but do not want to stay in a RV park. I was kinda thinking of that same spot out on Kane Creek. They may rent a Jeep and do some of the easier stuff. That might take me out of some of the club activities, but we'll see when it gets closer.

http://www.fototime.com/8B61A29111CE49E/orig.jpg

The Kane Creek campsite is closer to Main/Center Streets at 10.8 miles and 26 minutes of driving.

The Behind the Rocks campsite is farther at 14.1 miles, but a shorter drive at 17:33 minutes.

The Behind the Rocks campsite is also 3/10 of a miles closer to the nearest gas station. Waddya think? :)

One thing I have to consider is my scarry jeep on the highway. Kane Creek is a place where I can drive a lot slower to get into town. I know that sounds kind of silly but if you ever had to drive my jeep at speed on the highway you would understand.

Honestly the campsites out at Behind the rocks is nicer...I could do either.

Alex somebody linked this site from RME, has a decent amount of trail descriptions and maps, should be helpful on Strike Ravine = gps exchange files, google earth map, description of how to start the trail etc.

Thanks for posting that Jared. I figured out how to get the track from Trail Damage into my GPS, and from there into TOPO.

This looks like a mess so I'll explain.

The Blue solid line is the freehand track I copied from the National Geographic Moab South paper map showing the Strike Ravine trail to the digital version of National Geographic TOPO. The blue/red diamonds are the GPS waypoints TOPO generated which I put into my GPS and attempted to follow last October.

The red dashed line is the track posted on TrailDamage.com.

The solid red line is the track from TrailDamage.com of the closed area- looking at the speed of the track I think they walked it with a GPS.

The black dashed line is our track from last October- but only from after the lunch stop.

http://www.fototime.com/D575E04F5A05D26/orig.jpg

It looks things went to heck after we encountered the Private Property sign, I think it is right at the beginning of the solid red line showing the closed part of the trail. I think the TrailDamage people missed that small canyon that Ranger Rick spotted everyone across, that was one of the more fun parts of the entire trail. I think we did pretty good, considering the mess of trails. We can do better next time though!

BTW, Jared do you have a GPS?

I didn't want to be put in charge of doing Fall Fling trails because it is so hard to find leaders. I told the powers that be that if I was going to do them again this year that I wasn't going to stress myself out of finding leaders. If I can't find them I am not going to worry about it.

One less excuse for people on the fence about leading a trail: I have GPS tracks for Flat Iron Mesa and Cliffhanger. I can send them as an attachment on an e-mail in .gdb (Garmin Mapspource) or .gpx (GPS eXchange) format.

Another thought, have the easy group run Tip Toe Behind the Rocks while the hard group does the main trail? Remember a few years ago when Thursday on the Fall Fling was an everybody runs Hells Revenge day? Maybe we could try something like that but with 2 groups on Behind the Rocks. We could do a trial run next month and see if it would be a traffic jam or what.

As for experience on that side of Moab I've only been down the "main road" once to prostitute butte and it's two arches then a little further beyond before turning around. It wasn't long ago I used to feel that way but now I have no issues leading a trail I've never done.

My first NAXJA run was the 2002 Fall Fling everybody on Hells Revenge run one partly cloudy October friday morning, we split into two groups, the easy group pulling aside letting the hard group pass just after the first fin as we were all mixed up getting to the trail. We (the easy group) followed behind the hard group in a never ending snake of 50 sandstone surfing XJ's, on down to Hells Gate to watch some of the action before going on ahead. It worked out well that way. Have you ever listened to Fifty 4.0 inline sixes fire up at once in a grocery store parking lot!

I like the idea of tip toeing behind the rocks. Some areas along that route are still enough to drain the blood from the knuckles. I have led a group along fins and things that turned into a day full of u-turns to try to find the right path. Some of the trails have adequate marking, but others could really use a little more.

I ran Flat Iron last fall and wouldn't mind doing it again but I don't see anybody stepping up to lead Fins so... On a side note, if anyone wants to run Gold Bar Rim and the last part of Spike to the Golden Crack on Sunday I would be willing. I could lead if you want.

Sunday won't be an official trail day but you might find more then enough people willing to go.

Yeah, I hope so because it doesnt really take all that long. I have run that and Metal Masher in one day a couple times.

I'm still voting for Hell's Revenge for the easy ride on Thursday, but since I can't lead it someone will have to step up if that's what we want to do.

I will second that. I can't exactly remember why I didn't run it in the fall, but I think had something to do with a swamped Jeep.

I will be running it Thursday or Saturday even if I have to do it with a bunch of FJ's.

Hey, now! It was more the swamp than the jeep that ruined that run! :D:D:D

We can do that if a leader can found.

And I'll third it but like everyone else so far I can't lead it because I have never been on it. Also be taking it on with "trash lock rear and TruTrak front" if that sounds do-able for HR by taking most bypasses.

Hells can be run in a stocker. Especially if your a smart driver. You will not have any problems Tom.

Still looking for a leader to do hells Thursday. I'd even consider canceling Cliffhanger and just running Hells that day if that would entice somone to lead...
