View Full Version : Stronger Steering Assembly?

I've had three XJs now and all three have needed new steering assembly parts (tie rod, damper, etc). Since I plan on keep my '99 for a long time and putting a moderate lift under it (2"-3") I'd like to buy the right stuff. So what would you recommend for replacement parts? Stock or aftermarket?
I will need all new front upper and lower ball joints, complete tie rod assembly (3 of the 4 ends are gone), damper, and maybe trac bar (although this seems fairly tight).
I'm not sure how to check upper and lower control arms but they at least look intact.
So eBay parts? Jeep Parts? Or stronger aftermarket stuff?
Thanks

"Currie Enterprises Complete Heavy Duty Tie Rod Systems" Sounds really cool, but will it fit an XJ with no lift (yet)? It only says for 97-01 Wrangler.

i have to be careful here, a currie mole is lurking in the mist waiting for my every post...
It is a complete system that works on any cherokee XJ, and TJ. I have seem it on a stock hieght Tj before but the steering wheel had to be off center a bit because the draglink at full adjustment was not enough and wouldnt get any shorter. But since a XJ steering box is about 2" taller then a TJ I would say it should be ok. Even if it isnt you can always cut or have cut, about 1" of the draglink. Theres plenty of threaded area to do it and never effect anything.

Do we think (know) that the tie rod ends are beefier?

oh I dont think, I know they are. Always have been. They are not even off the shelf parts (good for strength but bad for avail in a jamb). They are larger in the ball area then the larger "1-ton" (uned in 3/4 tons lol) stuff but with the pin/shaft of the smaller jeep stuff.
