Console Swap - Ebrake!

I'm in the midst of putting a 97 console in my 96 - this thread won't make any sense to anyone who isn't familiar with the 96 and 97 ebrake setups.

Anyway, heres my question: I want to keep my 96 ebrake cables, etc...However, as you know, the 96 setup has a Metal threaded rod going from the equalizer (the point where the two brake cables meet) and the handbrake. The 97 setup just has a cable coming into the hand brake.

I'm not that familiar with cable, and the fasteners that you can get for it. But, how can I take a 12" or so length of cable, and make it go from the equalizer to the handbrake? The 97 has a molded end by the handbrake, is it possible to get cable with a similar molded end?

any advice would be welcome. THanks!

I guess more specifically - does anyone know how to install a "stop" on the end of a piece of wire rope/cable??

If this were possible at home, I would just loop the cable around the equalizer bracket, and then install a "stop" similar to what is on the 97 brake setup.

Any ideas??

When I did mine I just used the 96 ebrake lever. I removed the front bolt that hold it to the floor and drilled a new hole about 1" towards the drivers seat so the lever would point towards the 4wd lever instead of down the middle. I used some silicone to seal up the old bolt hole so it would not leak. And now the ebrake lever comes out at the correct angle to use the 97 and newer console. You are going to have to trim up the front of the console to fit by the lower heater ducts, but not really that hard to do. If I remember correctly the 4wd beezil light takes a different socket than the older one but it uses the same bulb. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response - I did think of moving over the old brake lever. However, my button from the 96 brake lever feels like it's about to pop off! It's terribly worn.

I think it's possible to use the 97 handle, but I need to know how to attach a "stop" to the end of a wire rope.

Try these:

You may be able to find other solutions using similar search terms, the thimble and clamp idea is what I immediately came to mind for me. The rope swage stop is good too.

Search terms: wire rope, steel rope, clamp, swage stop
